Home Remedies for Getting Rid of Blackheads

Blackheads can be described as small plugs which develop in the pores of the skin.  They occur when the sebaceous glands (those which produce oil) become over active and clog up.  This sebum hardens and the part at the top – exposed to the air – oxidizes which causes it to turn black.

The sebaceous glands can become infected as a result of this blockage and this is what causes acne.  Therefore removing and preventing blackheads is paramount to the control of acne proper.

There are several commercial products on the market but it is worth knowing that there are many home remedies for getting rid of blackheads available to you as well.  Many have been tried and tested and appear to work but it is important to remember different methods have varying results for different people.  Have a go and see what works for you!

When applying any mixture to the face, always take care to avoid the eye area.

• Mix cornstarch with vinegar, place on the affected are and cover with a plaster for 15 – 30 minutes.  Wash off with warm water.
• Rubbing tea tree oil on spots will fight infection.
• Mix together 2 tablespoons of almond meal, 1 tablespoon of ground lemon rind and 3 – 4 tablespoons of milk to make a facial scrub.
• Mix 2 – 3 drops each of cedarwood and sandalwood oils and gently massage over the whole face.
• Boil milk and add some lime juice.  Allow to cool and apply to the face.
• Rub tomato pulp directly to your blackheads.

Although not home remedies for removing blackheads in the traditional sense, there are a number of other things you can do to keep your skin happy without stepping foot in a chemist.

• Use water based and non comedogenic cosmetics to reduce pore-clogging oils.
• Ensure you remove all make-up and thoroughly cleanse your face every night.
• Avoid greasy and sweet foods.
• Increase the Vitamin A content in your diet.
• Drink at lease 8 glasses of water every day and eat foods with a high water content such as cucumber and melon.
• Avoid hot and humid environments.
• Try to avoid stress.  Exercise is ideal for this and also improves blood circulation, allowing the body to fight bacteria more effectively.
• Avoid over-exposure to the sun and use sufficient sunscreen.
• Avoid excessive picking and squeezing of blackheads and spots.
• Have a face towel exclusively for your own use.
• Chance your pillowcase every fortnight at the very least.

When using any of these home remedies for getting rid of blackheads and other facial nasties, always give them a fair try before moving on to the next.  The key is to reduce pore-clogging oils but don’t forget that even the clearest skin needs some oils so make sure not to dehydrate it.

There’s plenty of ‘food’ for thought here so try them and see what works for you!
